Founder and President
James Eugene Baize
By the end of World War II, James “Jim” Eugene Baize had distinguished himself as an American war hero receiving 23 medals for bravery and service in the line of duty. As a U.S. Navy boatswain in the Pacific Fleet piloting shore landing crafts, he participated in four major invasions – Saipan, Tinian, Guam and Iwo Jima. On his approach to the shores of Saipan during its invasion, Jim was shot, but recovered. Eight months later, he was tasked with delivering Marines to the shores of Iwo Jima during the first wave of the invasion’s assaults. Twenty yards off shore, his landing craft received a direct mortar hit, killing all 38 marines and other crewmen on board. The explosion was so horrific, the U.S. Navy reported him as killed in action and he was left on the shores of Iwo Jima – although he was alive. He was then rescued by the fighting Marines, and although he had three ruptured vertebrae and numerous shrapnel wounds, he fought side-by-side with his rescuers for the next seven days, until another mortar hit resulted in his being evacuated to a hospital ship followed by a seven-month recovery.
During his recovery, Jim began his scholastic work, which led him to eventually obtaining a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Northwestern University and a B.S. in Nuclear Engineering from Purdue. He then served in senior-level positions at various companies, including Chief Plant Engineer at General Motors. In 1959, he embarked upon obtaining his dream of owning a number of companies that would provide engineering, construction and development services to the military, public agencies and corporate clients. Jim has since become a leader not only in business, but also in the community, dedicating his time to helping numerous philanthropic organizations such as the American Legion, VFW, Marine Corp Heritage Foundation, Lions Club and various school organizations, sports associations and educational foundations. He is a frequent speaker, and was requested to speak at the Graduation Ceremony for Camp Pendleton, California. His biography is memorialized in the book Words of War, which is part of the Congressional Record at the U.S. Library of Congress.
